I want to open up a topic of discussion regarding usage of names.
I'm a fan of Patrick Rothfuss and his Name of The Wind book, because it gives a good perspective on how using certain names empowers or dis-empowers people(if you haven't read the book I recommend the read). But more to the point it fueled my own previous idea that the choice of words and names is important for how something is perceived by people.
1. The first point would be the name of the group (I'll go with that for now), currently titled Spacecolony. Although Spacecolony sounds great, are we a spacecolony of what exactly? Of Earth in general? Or of Humans in general? Or of a specific country/nation/ whatever.
2. Second point is in regard to government of the group/colony. The term government to me signifies some sort of country/ nation and in the words of French president François Mitterrand: "Le nationalisme, c'est la guerre!" "Nationalism, is war!". I would be more inclined to wording it as council, especially since the voting seems to be by direct representation. Which bring me to point #3.
3. How does voting work? Is it going to be by direct representation? If it's based on direct contributions where you get a certain number of votes based on what monetary funds you have contributed, then is there going to be a cap? Do you lose voting rights if you don't contribute for a month even tho you might have contributed for 10 years? I would like to hear more in regards to how voting is going to work going forward.
I personally have an idea on how this could work out over periods of non-payment. I am a union member and have to pay a contribution fee to the union each month, however if I end up unemployed with no income(or on social aid) then for that period of time I do not have to contribute.
4. How do we decide on the the project/ goal to take. What would the debate look like? Who is going to take part in the debates? How long will a debate last, is it going to have a time limit, or can it be postponed indefinitely?
5. Contributions. How are they going handle the contributions? Is the group going to be a Non-Profit? Closed Membership? Company or for profit enterprise?
6. Are we a group? A colony? What term should be use to refer to ourselves ? "I am a member of Spacecolony?" "I am working for Spacecolony?" "I volunteer for Spacecolony?"
7. Can we actually pick a real name, and not a generic "Spacecolony"? xD
Thanks for taking the time to read though this, looking forward to your replies.
