There's a lot of talk about how we build the government, how we should arrange the constitution and such, but one thing we feel the conversation is lacking is a coherent understanding of metaethics, psychology, and how incentive structures can form as a result of the arrangement of the laws. We want to back the conversation out from the topic of "How we should make the constitution" to "What do we actually care about?" because that's going to inform the conversation quite a lot. What are the things we value that we feel like it needs? Why does it need those things? How do those things interact with all the other things? Our current running attempt to build a cultural/ethical system that we can live inside of is documented here, and we encourage people to check it out. A lot of the stuff in there are things that could and we feel should inform our systems of governance.

I agree.
I have found, most often, that when people lack an organizational structure they will tend to create whatever they require. The difficulty with this situation is when one party becomes more powerful than any other and uses that power to enforce their will upon others.
Therefore, in order to retain harmony, a focus on how to prevent such an inequality from occurring and, in the event it happens anyway, how to fix it would be one of the best uses of our time. Everything else will happen naturally.

The traditional way to do that is with multiple branches of government that act as checks and balances on each other.

I think that is still too high level.
How are the citizens going to be able to hold individuals in power accountable. I feel that is where we should begin.

Well there's a number of things:
1) Heavily disincentivize power grabs through a proper system of checks and balances to ensure it takes as many people as possible to break the system. 2) Leave as much power in the hands of the people as possible, don't have a few powerful leaders, spread the power out as widely as you can. 3) A robust and functional petitioning system, including the ability to force a new election 4) Deterministic government, government where people in power have as little influence over how the machinery works as possible. 5) Explicitely make all the rules and laws able to recursively self-modify themselves, and always require them to justify themselves from first principles.
Just as a starting place.

I think it was LoreZyra who had suggested this, and I agree with him now.
