Since Colony have to posses substantial amount of water anyway, breeding fishes seems to be good option for actual meat production. Depending on specie, but it should be possible to have fishes which will consume algae, so tripling ponds as food source (even double, as algae can also be consumed), water, and oxygen generator. And with eventual bugs, available for consumption, they can be also feed to fishes, extending possible variety of species.

As a native Alaskan, I don't see a big problem with fish as a food.
The problem, I sense, would be more about the water. In space, water is already a scarce commodity. Perhaps if we incorporate the water into the water reclamation process, somehow, it might work but that's over my head in terms of engineering.

Agree with phicksur - I don´t think the water tanks for breeding of fishes is a good idea up there. Water is for people only, even the plants are not to be in hydropony, now it seems the misting of roots is better solution...

Not like those fishes would drink all that water! Just additional storage, probably part of reclamation system.
